Disney has gone to the Dark Side
Did you just feel that disturbance in the force? As if a thousand gamers cried out and then were silenced?
My guess would be they all just heard that EA won exclusive rights to make Star Wars games. Let us take a moment here and contemplate what our society has wrought. This, my children, is what it looks like when evil wins. We all thought, at the end of Episode VI, that the Rebel Alliance had won. But instead, we come to find that the Empire is still alive and well. Giving exclusive rights to any company is always a bad idea. ALWAYS. It results in stagnation and the company typically feels no need to innovate or even try to be competitive. Why? Well, where else are you going to go to get the game? Look at any series where exclusive rights have been given and you can typically see the quality begin to dip over time.
But that would be if I was talking about any other company. Here, we are talking about a company that has not one, but two "Worst Company in America" awards from the Consumerist. I want you to take a moment and really let that sink in. That is the company that will be making your Star Wars games. The company that brought us, "Sim City is an MMO, that is why it needs to be constantly connected to the internet for you to play the single player." now is in control of Star Wars. The company that killed the Ultima series (yes, I'm old and I'm referencing it because I can) is now in control of Star Wars.
There has never been a more blatant example of money talking then this. Seriously, that is like selling your beloved pet puppy to a dog fighting ring because they offered the most money. And that is all this really is for Disney. It's just cash signs and money register noises like in the cartoons. Yeah, EA won the bid for Star Wars. But you think Disney would have also said something like..."We took a look at your track record and you really are kind of horrible at this. Maybe we shouldn't do this..."
In a quote from Disney, you can really see where their head is. Disney sold the rights to EA to make games for a "core gaming audience" while Disney will "retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories." Clearly Disney doesn't care at all about you or me. They looked at a marketing spreadsheet, saw that the money is in mobile casual gaming right now. They made the choice to not bother with console gaming and instead focus on casual gaming.
EA has a long and sordid history of selling half-finished product and simply using the name to sell those products. Giving them the Star Wars license is like the Holy Grail for that company. They can put out any crap they want and people will buy it because it says "Star Wars" on the cover. Look forward to a whole lot more of this:
And you might as well assume that this is dead or will be given the Ultima 9 treatment:
