Microsoft Does A U-Turn On Xbox One's DRM, Always On Features
Well, this is unexpected. After Microsoft's confident swagger at last week's E3, complete with dismissing any criticism levelled at them, the company has pulled a staggering and unprecedented about-turn on the Xbox One's controversial DRM and always-online requirements. It would have seemed like a fool's dream last week, and Microsoft has shown every sign of sticking to their guns, even in the face of Sony's slam-dunk last week. Some were calling a victor in the console wars before they'd even begun. However last night everything changed. So what exactly has been announced? Let's break it down:
- The requirement to check in once every 24 hours or lose access to playing offline is gone. Instead a one-time connection will be required when you first set-up and then you never need venture online again if you don't want to.
- Microsoft was requiring all games to be installed to the hard-drive. This is also no more- physical games will now require the discs to run.
- All pre-owned, lending, sharing or rental restrictions have been lifted. You will be able to do whatever you want with your games, just as you do now,
- Also following a similar announcement from Sony, regional restrictions have also been lifted.
The Xbox one will require a day-one patch to remove the features. So this is all good right? Microsoft have likely won great swathes of their supporters back, and indeed the Xbox One (now being known as the Xbox 180 by many) has seen a considerable spike in presales since. However, it will still have that huge price-tag and mandatory Kinect to contend with. And indie developers still require a publishing partner. In other words: Xbox One's path to success is still far from assured- but this is definitely a step in the right direction. What about you readers?
